Just got back from a 3 day solo around the Emory Peak region. Carrying water is an interesting feature. The recommendation to carry a gallon for each day is very good advice indeed. Will try to post pictures sometime. I love this place. Saw only one hiker on the majority of the trail system I was on.

Re: Backpacking Big Bend
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 5:20 PMAt about eight pounds per gallon it might be heavy, but worth every ounce. Please post a few of your photos to the photo page when you get a chance. I've never been there but have read some pretty good things about the area. Nice that one can still find solitude in the lower 48. -

Re: Backpacking Big Bend
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:17 PMI love my osprey ariel 65 pack, complete with "back panel hydration sleeve." Makes humping that ~24 lbs of H20 as well as all the other gear well within my means. Last big trip was up around Neah Bay, WA. I only had a flimsy, non-camping backpack to carry well over 40 lbs of stuff over a total of 9 miles in 3 days (a huge feat for me). Being 5'5", 135 lbs soaking wet at the time, and having rather weak upper body strength, it was not fun. I did it, and without complaint (hell, I made my bed by not getting a proper pack, so I didn't want to irritate my companions by bitching about it) but it was not fun.
Yeah. I spoiled myself with my REI dividend this year. It was well worth it, though. This new pack will last me forever. I love my new pack. -

Re: Backpacking Big Bend
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:01 AMHaving the right gear makes all the difference. I didn't bring any water purifying stuff....it wouldn't have mattered anyway as the water was like scant and when available, dark sooty brown in color....yum........tasty! -

Re: Backpacking Big Bend
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:30 PMYeah. One of my friends had brought a water purifying pump, which he used at the little pool of fresh stream water that flowed down to the beach. The water was a kind of dark red and had an odd taste (from the tannins in the fallen trees), but tasted fine when we cooked with it. As far as gear, needless to say I'll never make the same mistake again. -

Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:50 PMHere's a link to some pictures of my Big Bend solo. This place is primitive, complex, compelling and inviting....inviting yourself to inner realms in a landscape turned inward-outward.

There's more stuff on that blog too, about living in Marfa Texas. -
