The Outsak thread made me wonder if any of you have any favorite new gear?
Mine: Outsak and iphone. I know the iphone isn't really backpacking gear, but it can be used quite creatively. The Outsak is such a innovative piece of gear. The Grand Canyon refers to them as interlocking wire mesh bags. Great for critters

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 6:18 PMI tried out the Insul-Mat out for the first time this season. It's soooo comfy. I'm almost afraid to get too used to it. I have a couple of Therm-a-Rests that are still in good shape. -

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 12:04 AMOh, yeah I almost forgot!
www.steripen.com/
steripen water purifier. I've tried everything from boiling water to iodine to drops to tablets to all kinds of ceramic filters. My brother bought one of these and I dismissed it as being ridiculous and probably too fragile to really work in the back country. I ended up loving it. The water is not affected in terms of taste unlike the chemical solutions and you know it's working because the device tells you when the water is ready (unlike the ceramic filters when you may or may not realize there is a crack or other problem with them). This thing is battery operated, which is the only possible negative, but then you can always bring tablets as a backup. -

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 12:07 PMjust remember, if you are dipping your nalgene directly into the stream, that the water on the threads of your bottle will still be untreated! -

Re: Best New Gear
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 12:10 AMthat's very true. I use a gatorade bottle - unscrew the cap and keep that away from the water. Fill the bottle with water and treat it using the steri pen and then dry off the threads completely with a bandana and then reapply the cap.
If I'm filling multiple bottles, I just use one bottle to fill all of them, hopefully reducing cross contamination further. -

Mon, October 19, 2009 - 4:00 PMI haven't got any new gear in years, but it's time to get some new boots soon. -

Re: Best New Gear
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 10:58 AMGood luck with that. I've tried so many times that I finally gave up and had mine resoled a few years ago. They are seven, (maybe nine?) years old now and I'm not sure how much longer the uppers will last. Boots are made far too narrow these days, even when I buy men's boots I can't find a comfortable pair. Make sure you go to a reputable place that will let you return them when they don't work out. I had a pair for four months that would not break in; REI let me return them no questions asked.

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 9:38 AMYou like the steri pen? I am curious about it, but I want to try it before I buy. -
-
Re: Best New Gear
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 8:59 PMYeah, I love the steri-pen, I'm still going to carry micropur tablets as a back up, but after using ster-pen for a week, I'm totally sold. I never would have even considered it if my brother hadn't purchased it for our trip. I was very skeptical, but now I'm a believer. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Best New Gear
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 11:45 PMThe steri-pen sounds like my next purchase. I purchased a new sweetwater ultralite filter for $100 and have not even taken it out of the package yet. Time to start digging through my receipts... -

Re: Best New Gear
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 4:37 PMI find that dehydrated water is the best, and lightest way to take care of the thirst.
1) add dehydrated water to bottle
2) rehydrate water with a bit of water
3) enjoy
