I want to go backpacking in the rain

well, I don't really want to be hiking in the rain, what I want instead is to hike before the rain, set up camp, and then hang out in my tent in the rain, cook in the vestibule, walk around a little in my raincoat, and sleep in the tent listening to the rain. Then I want the rain to stop for the next day's hike, and then rain again after everything is all set up just right. On, and I also want to have nice views of a lake or mountain ridge or something that I can look out at form my tent while it's raining. And I also want my sweetie to be there to help me keep the tent warm.

Well, as others here will attest to, a few of our tribe trips have ended up rainy. It comes with the desire to backpack during the fall, winter, and spring. ;-)

It's incredibly difficult to arrange a trip where it rains only when you're set up... but it sometimes happens...

More often, it seems, the skies open up and proceed to drench everything just when you set the sleeping bag on the ground while you are setting up the shelter. I have spent more wet, cold, miserable nights in the woods than I care to remember.

well I did specifically say that I wanted the rain to start only after I set everything up just right, and I'm sticking with that!

i've camped many many nights in the rain. i think i've had it sprinkle on me during a backpack. packing up a wet tent is not everything you think it is.

I've found that the best way to camp in rainy conditions is to set up a rainfly over my hammock.

Whether you use a Hennessy or a Crazy Creek hammock you're likely to stay dry. The great thing is that you can pack up all your stuff under the rainfly and stay perfectly dry doing so. The only wet things you'll have to deal with is the rainfly itself, your packcover, and your rain gear or poncho.

Of course this only works in areas that have trees, but that's usually where I would choose to be when I expect a storm.
