Every year I organize a beginner's backpacking trip and this year is no exception. Everyone is welcome to join in, no matter what level of backpacking experience you may or may not have. I typically select a destination in Sequoia National Park for it's beauty and the fact it is roughly equidistant from both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
We usually leave the city after work on Friday night, make the drive to a designated, easily located rendezvous point (either a campground or a friend's house near the trailhead), hike in on Saturday, lounge, fish, or dayhike on Sunday, and then hike out on Monday to make the drive back home.
The cost for the weekend is minimal, especially when carpooling. I am happy to loan equipment to anyone who might need to borrow stuff for the trip. Being a total gearhead, I have enough extra equipment and outdoor clothing to outfit a small army.
More specific information will be posted in this thread as time goes by.
So, if you think you might want to join in on this trip, please post your intentions.

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 2:19 PMAdd two to your list.
I'll attend and bring along my 13-y/o boy. He has a little backpacking experience, but he's still a beginner. He's also a Boy Scout and has his own gear.
Also, I might be able to help others by providing a ride for folks in the San Francisco area that want to go. If I take the station wagon, I should be able to carry one or two additional riders and their gear. -

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 5:22 PMQuaydin - younger backpackers are more than welcome. We've had both a 13 y/o boy and girl on our trips. They do a great job of keeping things in perspective.
Thank you for carpooling!

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 5:21 PMOooooh, sorry to hear that you folks have scheduling conflicts. Hey, feel free to suggest other weekends for Sequoia trips. I always have the 1st weekend of every month free for backpacking as well as the 5th (in long months), and it's only a four or five hour drive to the park from my house in the SFV area of L.A. -

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:53 AMThe weather should be pretty nice. Highs in the 60s or 70s and lows ranging from upper 30s to 40s, but I hate to forecast so far out, but we've been pretty lucky in the past. Bring the ususal layers of clothing. I'll be hiking in running shorts during the day but will probably end up putting on long underwear, fleece and a shell for hanging out at night. Mosquitos are usually not much of a problem that time of year which is a big plus.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 3:39 PMTo Messieurs J and Widget:
I recently bought a starter 5" Newtonian scope. Is it okay if I bring it? In the past we've always rendezvous'd at J's and then just before taking off we stopped there again. Can I leave the scope at J's and then pick it up before we head back to LA?

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:15 PMJ & C are kayaking the Colorado. Well they should actually be off the river by now, but probably have not made it home yet to check. I'm sure that your telescope would be just fine there. It'll be nice to do a little stargazing if the weather cooperates.
As a matter of note, Mercury is visible for a change. That does not happen very often.

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 4:54 PMExcellent!
Our campsite destination of Whisky Log Camp (there's a fallen Giant Sequoia there) can accomodate quite a few people as there are several flat areas next to the South Fork of the Kaweah River. More information will follow. I think that "Bear Grillis" has some photos up from our last trip there and I'll provide a link when I can find it. -

I'm trying to talk Darwin and Gary into joining us.
I love those guys!
Mariah most likely will not be attending as she is in a discipleship program and that is not her "homepass" weekend. Drats! Can't wait to hear all about her trip to Joshua Tree this past Sunday/Monday.
Peter, hit me up via email when you have a chance.

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:11 AMMelanie and I are up for carpooling if anyone has room. I don't have a problem getting the two of us up there, but I don't think I could fit more than our two packs in my Altima. We are in the San Fernando Valley.
I can't wait.

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:31 PMHey All,
Things are coming together for the trip rather nicely. I will be purchasing the food soon, so if you have any dietary restrictions, food allergies, or absolutely hate what I propose, please let me know:
Menu:
Breakfasts: Instant Oatmeal (various flavors) or Cream of Wheat, instant coffee.
Lunches: 1st day Trader Joe’s spinach bagged salad w/pecans, cranberries, and dressing.
Other days, dry salami, cheese, peanut butter, Nutella, jelly, pita bread sandwiches in any combination you can tolerate.
Dinners: Saturday – Beef Burritos with Red beans & rice, cheese, and salsa.
Sunday – Pasta Carbonara (cream sauce with parmesan cheese & peas & ham)
You can bring a few energy bars of your choice for snacks and/or desserts, powdered beverage of your choice (Gatorade, tea, Crystal lite, etc.). I’ll buy some instant hot cocoa and some teabags too.
Please remember to bring your own fork, spoon, and knife, and lightweight cup and bowl.
John and I will both bring stoves and cooking pots, so we’re covered there.
Happy trails await!

Sat, May 17, 2008 - 12:14 AMWhat do you guys foresee the bug situation will be? I just came from Mt. Wilson from 20:00 to 23:00 these little things were feasting on me despite my efforts to swat them. I hope I didn't get the West Nile Virus.

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 3:03 PMIt's been 100 degree hot for the past few days, and if we aren't at high point flow on the South Fork of the Kaweah River, we aren't far from it.
We went rafting down the main fork of the Kaweah earlier in the week, class 2-3-4 fun.
The weather forecast looks a-ok, around 70 degrees... and as most of the walk to the campsite is shaded, picture perfect.
Lows in low 40's @ night seems about right. No forecast of rain
If you have walking poles, bring em along. I think I have an extra pair to lend out, if somebody would like to borrow.
Hard to say what the bug situation is there, but we'll find out?

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 3:01 PMSpring conditions usually means ~lots~ of mosquitos.
Best be prepared with plenty of insect repellant for exposed skin and for spraying on shirts. The mozzies will bite you through shirts if they can.
I never go spring camping without a headnet to wear in the mornings and at dusk. The clouds of mozzies can drive you nuts with their keening. -

Re: Memorial Weekend Backpacking Trip - May 24 thru May 26, 2008
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 10:23 PMWeather update:
40% chance of rain on Saturday (20% @ night), otherwise the weekend looks fine.
low 60's in the day, high 30's-low 40's @ night.
We road>tripped to Cedar Grove yesterday, and the Kings River was a raging torrent, and Roaring River Falls got all misty for us.
Beautiful spot, looks a little like Yosemite with a smaller array of waterfalls and high canyon walls...
